Chlorine Gas from Cylinders /Tonners at regulated pressure passes through a Flow Control Valve, Rotameter/Flowmeter, Moisture-Trap and Check Valve to Packed Absorption Tower where it gets uniformly mixed with the incoming water. The chlorine solution is then discharged to the point of application [normally discharged into a sump or reservoir at elevation below the Absorption Tower only]. The Flowmeter directly indicates the amount of chlorine consumed. It is very important that the required water flow to the Absorption Tower to be constant and continuous at the time of operation for safety reasons.

Automatic Vacuum Regulator [AVR] is the most important part of the Chlorinator. It is designed to close at pressure and open at vacuum (normally). So, without vacuum it should not allow chlorine gas to the injector of the chlorinator. The logic is that, whenever there is loss of vacuum in the injector due to no flow or low pressure of motive water. Pipe breakages in vacuum line, the regulator does not allow the flow of hazardous chlorine gas, making this system fool proof interms of safety and operation.

Gas filter represents a new approach to the removal of the nuisance causing impurities in the chlorine gas. The gas filter has two chambers. The lower portion acts as a trap for liquid impurities (re liquifies gas) and the sudden enlargement decrease the velocity so that gas is unable to carry entrained droplets of liquid. The upper portion has a removable filter element. The filter element is especially impregnated so that ferric chloride "plates out" rapidly as it passes through the element. Therefore the filter acts as both a filter and a condensate trap.

Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) is a spring loaded diaphragm-actuated valve. Normal set pressure of a prv is 1-2 kgs/cm² for an upstream Pressure of 9-13 kgs/cm² depending on ambient temperature. The prv provides superheat for the chlorine vapour thereby reducing the chance of reliquification in pipeline downstrem of prv. If the prv is by-passed the super heat provided by rv will be lost. Besides, chlorine gas metered at the flowmeter/rotameter will be more precise. If the flow of chlorine is metered at reduced pressure. Use prv in conjuction with gas filter to avoid impurties getting stuck in the seat of the prv.
